While clients participate in a variety of programs and activities offered at Toronto Addiction Rehab, it is important that we dedicate sufficient time to one-on-one Addictions Counselling to ensure the client remains on track and effectively working towards recovery. We work with the client to modify treatment plans where required while ensuring we explore client attitudes towards treatment in order to modify where needed.
Addictions Counsellors work with a variety of treatment methods and will work with clients to explain rationale for methods chosen for that specific client’s treatment plan.
Methods used at Toronto Addiction Rehab are all client centred and include Reality Therapy, Behavioural Therapy, Talk Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, as well as Systemic Counselling and Life Skills Counselling. Addictions Counsellors will always ensure that a client is comfortable and knowledgeable about their treatment method before proceeding, and will take time to review the effectiveness of the method going forward to ensure long-term recovery.
In one-on-one sessions, the Addictions Counsellor will walk the client through a series of six core steps:
The counsellor will always seek to gain as much realistic information about the client as possible, prompting the counsellor to ask the client a series of questions about their addiction. Questions will seek to explore the nature and duration of the problem, as well as the client’s own motivations for seeking help. Relevant past history will be discussed while taking time to cover the client’s expectations and wishes for their treatment.
Several factors are considered while the counsellor evaluates the client’s current situation and possible solutions. The counsellor will seek to understand the nature and severity of the client’s problems while considering possible treatment options. In order to maximize the client’s investment in our programming, we will also evaluate client readiness and perception towards their participation as well as the client/counsellor fit.
During the feedback process, the counsellor will use plain terms to share with the client their observations as well as suggest possible treatment options based on what the counsellor hears through information gathering and evaluation. Once the feedback has been delivered, the client is free to ask questions or seek clarification, with the ultimate goal of coming to mutual agreement for a way forward.
In order to solidify a way forward, the counsellor and client will work together to draft an Addictions Counselling Agreement that will cover important details of the treatment process. Logistics details will cover the duration, topics covered, number of treatments and length of stay at Toronto Addiction Rehab. Expectations and goals will be clearly stated and steps will be clearly broken down in manageable sections so to have the client’s path well-planned. The client must agree to the terms placed into the agreement and will be required to “own” their part in the process.
Throughout the program, the client and counsellor will check in with the process, methods and treatment plan to ensure the most effective methods are being used to achieve intended goals. This ongoing maintenance of the treatment plan will ensure that the clients’ needs are being met throughout the whole process.
The termination process is not a quick one, but rather a stage within the treatment plan where the client, the counsellor and the entire clinical team will work towards an eventual discharge and aftercare plan. This process is intended to ensure that the client stays sober and is able to continue strategies and life skills learned in treatment to manage every-day aspects of continued recovery.
